Back to Belize!

BELIZE CITY, Belize – My first time hearing of this majestical country was from my younger brother in 1994. We were living in South Africa while my father was the Managing Editor of Ebony South Africa and attending the American International School of Johannesburg. Our school was a melting pot of cultures, ethnicities and languages, a small United Nations. That’s where we first discovered a place that was equally as diverse as our school: Belize.

Located in Central America, Belize is one of the most environmentally unique countries in the world. Home to the second largest barrier reef, within Belizean borders lays two main ecosystems, marine and terrestrial that include wetlands, seagrass beds, coastal savannahs as well as broadleaf forests and a variety of lakes and rivers.

My newest project is to explore these sectors, beginning with marine ecosystems, and study the impact of global warming and climate change on the barrier reef and coast erosion, specifically how these changes are impacting women and girls. Through proposed multimedia production courses at the George Washington University as well as cultural exchange programs, I expect to be spending a lot of in this beautiful country over the next four years. Stay tuned for the next adventure!
